I now live in close to Washington County, Indiana and went to school at Monroe in Washington County, Indiana with descendants of this group of Bowlings. My bus driver was the father of these Bowlings and I lived on Delaney Creek. I could go over there on a mission, if there was something in particular that this group wanted me to do.

Hi all,
Glad to see some activity! A bit on the Nowlins – there were also Nowlins in Patrick Co., VA. Sally Nowlin, daughter of Samuel & Olive (Shelton) Nowlin married James Luke Boling, son of James Bowling and Elizabeth Frances Morrison. These Bowlings are Group 5. James Luke & Sally Boling along with her parents, Samuel & Olive Nowlin, all moved to Washington Co., IN in the 1830’s. Sally died there at a fairly young age leaving 5 children (at least) and husband James Luke. James Luke remarried & had more children with the 2nd wife, Sarah Huckleberry. By the way, Olive (Shelton) Nowlin was the daughter of Eliphaz Shelton.
Samuel Nowlin was apparently the son of James Nowlin and Ursula Patterson – so there is another Patterson link with Group 5. I know nothing further about James & Ursula except that they were said to have been born ca 1750 and James Nowlin d. ca 1816 in Patrick Co., VA.
As to John & Jesse Bowling of Bumper’s Fork, Montgomery, NC – there has NOT been a DNA testee that is known to be from this line. I think the assumption has been made that they may be Group 6 because of their proximity to Group 6 folks. I would certainly not make that speculation as we know how easy it is to be fooled by proximity! It would be nice to find a solid link to a descendant of John Bowling of Bumper’s Fork to DNA test.

Mike,
I do not know past David Nowlin ...in what was Rutherford...but becomes Buncombe Co. NC. Doris' Margaret Nowlin m. Robert Patterson there in the marriage records. My James Bolling b. 1780 in VA somehow connects to the Jacob Phillips in Buncome Co. NC as he is the person who sells him his land. This land is however in Pendleton then later Pickens Co. SC. They may not have been really related at all. But we know they knew each other.
I am kin to this same line but by a 2nd wife. So the Nowlins are the mother of the 1st wife. I have not been able to trace them further. Don't know if Doris knows more or not. I have added her above in cc addresses.
We do know that Shubal, John, and Jesse Bolin all connect at Bumpers Fork of Little River. Can you post the church records for that church? I have not posted the Bumper's Fork deed as another DNA group claims these folks.
Mike are you in Group 5 DNA?
We have a Jesse Bolling and another group has a Jesse Bolling....and they are another DNA group. [Group 3 claims a Jesse and many in Group 4 or 6 also claim Montgomery Co. NC. It is a hodgepodge with some known bastardy bonds having been filed.
Let me add, however, that Thomas Pleasants that you mention below as a Quaker is supposedly in our line also. However, some folks do not accept that. So far I have found no supporting "outside family lore" documents to absolutely prove it. AND I might add that it is one that I have spent countless hours ....maybe a life time trying to prove.
I can get them all pretty close, though, in Halifax Co. VA. And because Mitchell Bolling of Halifax is maybe the same one in Montgomery Co. NC....I can kinda connect those two places.

Hi Hazael:
This is really getting interesting. The Nowlins you mentioned in NC -- are they by any chance related to a James Nowlin/Nowling, d. 1749, Goochland Co., VA? He had sons John, Daniel, and Stephen.
According to a transcript of James Nowlin's will, proved March 20, 1749, he owned land adjacent to Col. John Bolling in Goochland Co. and also adjacent to Edmund Lilly on Byrd Creek. This Edmund Lilly, b. 1728 (md. to Sarah Dumas) went on to Anson/Montgomery Co., NC and was a member of the Forks of the Little River Church that my 7th gen. grandfather John Bolin/Bolling, Sr. helped start. Both Willoughby/Willaby and Shubal Boling who went on to GA are said to have been sons of my John, Sr. although to my knowledge there is no actual proof. I've even seen some speculation that Delaney Bolin/Bolling who went on to MO? (I think) by around 1805 was another possible brother.
Also, a number of those neighbors on Byrd Creek in Goochland Co., VA in the mid-1700's were originally Quakers, including Edmund Lilly, the Andrew Moorman family, John Anthony, Abraham Venable, Thomas Pleasants, etc.
Edmund Lilly and his Dumas in-laws and the Moormans, and perhaps some other neighbors, pulled up stakes and went to Anson Co., NC around 1760.

Reportedly, The Willaby Boling listed with the Holcombs is the son of William Bolling below who lived on the Hudson River in Cherokee Co., GA and transferred land to his son, Allen Bolling, on 17 day of Feb 1848. As you can see, here he is with my husband's Goss line and your Disharoons. I believe this William is the son of John B olling who is listed near Glass Caston in Craven Co., SC earlier. The relatonship between Samuel Bolling [Group 7] and our Group 5 still amazes me... they seem to be ever close to each other.

I did a little bit of searching tonight! Here is some info on these folks....unless there is more than 1 Willoughby/Willaby/ Willaba Boling. I see from something today that there were several Milton Bollings...as well as Edgar Bollings.

I'm finally getting back to genealogical research after a year & am going through the pesky Boling, Bolen, Bolin, whatever. I saw your last posting in March 2004. You may have read some of my postings as I have the Bolings in Mo. with names similar to those in Ga. Mine is Willoughby Bolin & he was on the 1800 census of Montgomery Co., NC. I think he perhaps may have stopped in Ga. for a few years during his western migration as I can't find him on any 1810 census. He moves at least every 10 yrs. There is a Wilson Merrill Bolin in the same county in Mo. who I believe is probably a grandson of his. Since there is a Willoughby Boling in the Ga. area with all those NC Bolings, I'm hoping I can also learn something through those families.
My Willoughby Bolen was born sometime between 1770 & 1785; probably closer to 1780-1785. The year he was on the Montgomery Co., N.C. census there was also a Shuble listed in the same age group, which would match the age of the Shuble Boling on the 1830 Hall Co. census. I'm thinking maybe my Willoughby Bolen could be an uncle to the one living in Habersham Co., G.
There is also a Shubal Bolin in Owen Co., Ind. who is a son of Harbard Bolin from Montgomery Co., N.C. They all trace back to Montgomery/Randolph Co., N.C. Any ideas? BANKS COUNTY, GA - DEEDS Deed Book A Abstracts (1859-1874)

Group 5 Bolling Friends --
So sorry I've been away for such a long time; however, I'm still working.
While searching for my husband's lines in Habersham Co., GA, I ran on to this below and I believe they are Group 5. Here's why: My husband's line moved with and lived near John Bolling and the Ayres [below] while living near the Waxhaws in SC. In the early part of 1800s, some of them moved on to Habersham County, Georgia. We've been traveling by land and can easily see that moving from the western part of SC and over into Georgia ... THEN north into McMinn County TN is a much easier route. Traveling from SC directly into TN is almost impossible because of the rough terraine. So please consider that these are quite likely an extended part of Group 5:

Henry Brewer ..................... [my husband's line]

Edwin Horton ..................... [my husband's line]
James Wofford................... [Doris' line]
Joseph Holcombe - wife: Susanne. Heirs: Samuel, Abraham, Russell, Nancy Lovell, Elizabeth Hall, Charles S., Sarah House.
Wits: WILLABY BOLING, Jacob Duvall, William Chalmers.
There is a William Bolding/Bolling in Habersham Co., in the early 1800's as well. When I locate the citation among my many papers, I'll send it.
If you go to A.D. Smith's file on Rootsweb, you can see how these Ayres intermarry with the Bollings [descendants of James Bolling d1771, Pittsylvania Co., VA.]

Mike,
You may be right. I don’t think anyone has been able to link John Bolling Sr of Little River conclusively to Group 6, and he certainly can’t be a son to Benjamin Boling and Talitha Hancock of Group 6, but they could be related somehow. Another nearby family was Charles Boling of Randolph Co., NC. A Y-DNA testee & descendant of this Charles Boling doesn’t match Group 5 or Group 6, so that is puzzling.
By the way, Mitchell Bolling who is listed in a 1779 tax list in Randolph, NC with a John Bolling is obviously an older Mitchell than the one I cited who went to west TN and Marshall, MS. Maybe an uncle??
There was also a Mitchel Bolen in Halifax Co., VA in 1782 in a personal property tax list, along with a John Bolin and Sarah Sneed (Sarah was thought to be a Bolling). Probably a different Mitchell than the one in Randolph, NC in 1779, I would think.

Hello:
My name is Mike Moffitt and I just joined the list recently.
I believe there is a good chance that this Mitchell Boling is a son or close relative of my 7th generation grandfather John Bolin/Bolling, Sr. of the Little River, Montgomery Co., NC (b. abt 1730, prob. VA; d. abt. 1790, NC). Ken Poole has done a lot of research on this Montgomery/Randolph Co., NC family.
My line goes through John's daughter Sarah, b. abt 1767, Montgomery Co., NC who married John Reed, b. 1764 Deep River, Randolph Co., NC. Sarah Bolin and John Reed also ended up in TN in the 1830's -- Rutherford Co. and finally Bedford Co.
Mitchell's estimated birth date seems to be about right. My Sarah also had a brother named David who was a preacher and may have gone to TN.

All,
It was Mitchell Boling of Group 6 who went to the Memphis, TN area for a few years before 1840 and then to Marshall, MS. I don’t know all his children, but he and wife Nancy had at least 10. Here’s what I have in my notes about this guy – I also don’t know if you can connect any of the folks you mention to this family. Son Marion was supposedly born near Memphis. His descendant tested for DNA.:

Mitchel Bolin was on Capt. Harvey's district 1815 tax list of Randolph County, NC as one white poll on 200 acres Little River. [informant: Ora Callcott, 3016 Royalton, Greensboro, NC 27406 in 1992...related to Benjamin, grandson of Benj & Sarah Hancock Boling through their son Benjamin who md. P.Callicoat.]
---
Mitchell Bollin along with William and John Bolling (Bolin) were on a 1779 tax list of Randolph Co, NC. (693) Mitchell Boling along with Wm. and John were on a 1779 tax list (of Jacob Shepard) of Randolph Co NC. All three would have to be 21 years old or older so all born by 1758 and therefore he could not be the son of Benjamin Bolling born 1754 [informant also Ora Callicott.]
---
Mitchell Bolling was listed in the Hawkins Co., TN 1836 tax list in Civil District 11. Isaac Boling, who is supposed to be Mitchell's brother, was also listed there. According to Barbara Pendergrast, Mitchell Boling sold land in Hawkins Co. in Sept. 1837. His land adjoined land once owned by Isaac Boling. Mitchell & family moved to western Tennessee and then to Marshall, MS by 1840. Isaac was married to Mary Coltrane and moved to Owen Co., IN.

Nothing that I see here, or have on my files, show a connection here. Did you pass this by Doris or Hazael, as I know they had Bowlings in that section of north Alabama (Franklin Co., I believe), and Lawrence Co. (where George W. Bowling married 1st time) is adjacent to Franklin County.
