Joyce --
I'm not sure about the Woodson connection, but they intermarried with the Hughes. Here's John Bullington in Henrico/Goochland with the Hughes. As you all remember the earliest James Bowling of Goochland/Cumberland was somehow connected to these Hughes and to Christopher Clark who loaned him a considerable amounts of money.
"Colonial Wills of Henrico County, Virginia Part Two 1737-1781 with Addenda (revised)," Abstracted and Compiled by Benjamin B. Weisiger, III
Court 7 January 1722
Will of Charles Hudlesey presented by Susanna Hudlesey, his executrix and proved by oath of Elizabeth Bibe and solemn affirmation of Stephen Hughes, a Quaker, two of the witnesses; John Gun and Robert Hughes, security. Roger Carol, Fran's Eppison, Thomas Biby and Peter Baise to appraise estate.
On petition of Robert Hughes (George, son of Ralph Briggs, dec'd, relinquishing his right thereto) he is granted administration of said Ralph Brig's estate; Stephen Hughes and John Webb, security, Robert Carter, John Bullington, Jacob Michaux and Thos. Edwards to appraise the estate.
On another note, I'm surprised that Ann Bowling born July 1749 [married William] had children as late as 1796. Could Nancy Bowling who married Francis Woods be her grandaughter instead? By elimination, wouldn't this William bca 1740 have to the William listed with Christopher on the 1767 tax list in Pittsylvania since James bca 1756 was there with Christopher in Lee Co.., VA 1801-1803 and quite likely the same William who was with Christopher at Thomas Amis' store in Rogersville?
For Carol, the Roberts who connect to Phillip Roberts and Jesse Roberts came from Roberts Cove [wherever that is] and the DNA matches. Perhaps we can find William Bowling lurking around these Roberts earlier.
Your thoughts, please.
Ernie
Ernie, isn't there a Bullington married into the Woodson family somewhere? Seems like there is some controversy about it and and the Archer family involved someway?

Carol,
John: males 2 <10 (b. 1810-1820), 1 26-45 (John); females 1 26-45, 1 >45
(born before 1775, might be Ann).
This is a copy and paste from your email. This John is extremely likely to be my direct farthest known male ancestor. Here is what I have; paper trail and DNA.
My ancestry goes like this from me, backward. Me, Lester Bowling, Willie Bowling, Eli Bowling, John Bowling, William Bowling born 1817 in VA(and Winnie Sizemore born 1816 in Clay County, KY). Winnie Sizemore Bowling was still living when my father, Lester Bowling, was a young child. My father gave me eye witness information. The DNA testee is my brother, tested to 67 markers and a Deep Clade Test as well. As you noticed in your research, all information pointed to John Bowling, born 1790, as living in the household of, and related in someway, to Ann Bowling born abt 1749. From naming patterns and through a process of elimination, I sorted out the impossibles, and decided that my William was the son of this John(1790 VA).
This John(1790 VA) was, from your post, in Lee County VA in the 1820 census. In the 1830 census, he was in Perry County, KY. In 1840, he was in Clay County, KY. His son, John “Hammer” Bowling, Jr, born in VA in the mid 1820’s(before John Sr. moves to Perry County, KY) has a DNA testee(tested to 37 markers) who is an exact match with my brother. John Jr’s testee has a paper trail to John “Hammer” Bowling, Jr. I have the Mexican War and the Civil War military records for John “Hammer” Bowling, Jr. They fill out some of the other relatives in Clay County, KY verifying relatedness through sworn depositions.
Now.....what is not known for a certainty, is just how Ann in related to John(1790 VA) and who John’s father was. What it is looking like so far is that John’s father might have been a Bullington(the families were living close in Pittsylvania County, VA). Ann could be the daughter of James Bowling and listed in her father’s will when he died. She was of age and did not have a guardian or husband at the time. There is an Ann Bowling who continued to reside close to various Bowlings with the same names as her brothers listed in James Bowling’s will. They move around, but do not all go a separate ways. She may be the mother(she was still childbearing age) or grandmother to John or even Mother-in-law(it will take Mtdna testing to resolve this riddle). I believe that she is John’s mother.
The reason behind the belief that John’s father might be a Bullington is this: Even though tested to 67 markers, the only matches are 1. A Leslie(mulatto) tested to only 12 markers(exact match). 2. A Bullington tested to only 12 markers(an exact match). 3. A Bullington tested through Sorenson(a 24/25? marker tested) match. Some Bullingtons were prosperous slave owners. So far, it is looking like that Bowling is our maternal side, probably descended through James Bowling’s daughter Ann.
Our deep clade ancestry is R1b1b2a1b.
Our connection to each other seems to be through this Ann Bowling. If your Bolling ancestor is through one of her daughters the DNA will not match, but the relationship will be there anyway. The females residing with her could be grown daughters.....or daughter-in-laws.
It would be a good thing if the testee of your branch involved in this was tested farther.
What is your opinion of the information so far?
Arvina
