RE: Ann/Annie Mosely/Moseley/Mosley b. 29 July 1765 VA (dtr of Samuel
Mosely/Moseley/Mosley and Martha Hodges), Ann being the last wife of the
Thomas [also incorrectly? compiled as Martin] Hewlitt/Hewlitt [so far I've
spelled just Thomas as "Hewlitt" to match spelling in book "Va Wills and
Administrations"] whose will began probate in Henry Co VA on 10 Sep 1787
Thanks for so many of you who posted pieces of this genealogical puzzle on
the internet etc!
according to Linda Olds at
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-
bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lindaolds&id=I3972
that will says:
Will filed 19 Mar 1787 Martinville, Henry Co., Virginia
THOMAS HEWLETT's will filed in Henry County Virginia on the 19th day
of March 1787: Pr 10 Sept 1787
In the name of GOD, Amen. I, Thomas Hewlett, of Henry County Virginia,
am at this time in my perfect senses and right memory, thanks to Almighty
God for it, I do make this my last will and testamen, viz.,.
To my dearly beloved wife, Ann Hewlett, I give everything I possess during
her life, and after her death to William Hewlett, son of Thomas Hewlett and
to Martin Hewlett, son of Alfred Hewlett*, and to Susannah
Darnal,[apparently his dtr Susannah, wife of Nicholas Darnell] son of
Thomas Darnal, and do ordain my beloved wife, Ann Hewlett, and her father
Samuel Moseley and William Hewlett to be Executors.
Witness my hand this 19th day of March 1787
(Signed) Thomas Hewlett, S.S.

in last line above is IMMEDIATE DISCREPANCY with hypothesis that
Thomas Hewlett/Hewlitt's widow could have been mother of Thomas's kids,
or at least she not born 1728. That's because above it says Ann (Moseley)
Hewlett's father Samuel Moseley is an executor expected probably to
survive/execute-the-will during the coming years until 1790's when this will
may continue to be probated. WHEREAS, the father of somone born 1728
would have been almost 90 years old by 1790s! (An almost unknown old age
during the 1700s, certainly not then an age to BEGIN an executorship!)
Before the year 2000 finding the proper Ann (Moseley) Hewett, daughter of
Samuel was much harder. Before 2000, compiling unrealistic origins was
more understandable. That's EXACTLY why in 2000, four of us [I,
Forsythe, did most of the colonial records] published a two volume Moseley
genealogy. For the past nine years an electronic updated version of the 2
volumes have been posted at databases named moseley1 and moseley2 on
http://wc.rootsweb.com
If we use the above will to search among all the entire million databases at
http://wc.rootsweb.com
for [--where * is a "wild card" for ANY further continued letters]
Ann* Mos* daughter of Sam* born 1730-1770 anywhere in the entire world,
then we find 28 records, only one record being compiled as born in Virginia
--who is, above in my subject line:

Hazael's comments:
I only found this deed recently.    I am nearly positive that he is my James Bolling m. Anne Pickens who in 1810 census 3 years after this lives adjacent to the below deed of William Parris wife Darcus Pickens.    The men were married to sisters.    NOTE:  He clearly says James Bolling is of Greenville Dist. SC  in 1807 so in 1800 census he should be in either Washington or in  Greenville [Washington going back & forth with Greenville.]  AND it is my belief that in 1820 John Bolding is living on this same land near Robert Pickens.

They are too near the same ages to be father & son...so I think he is Doris' John Bolding the brother.]

So where is my James in 1820?  I just do not know.

[signed] Joseph Leech;  [witness] John Bolding & Martha Leech; wit. oath Feb. 5, 1822 by John Bolding & J. Douthit QU; Mar. 26, 1822 recorded & examined by John T. Lewis, cc & RMC, book P. p. 433.

[Hazael's comment:  from the 1820 census you can figure out that this John Bolding was living near to my Robert Pickens and I believe him to be Doris' ancestor the John Bolding brother to my James.     I am thinking she has confirmed this from the ages of the children listed.  [My James is no longer living there in that census.]  Don't know for sure where he is.]
Another comment - remember all that I have sent showing name Tallifero is pronounced as Toliver....ie Toliver Bolling of Sullivan Co. Tenn. Bollings.

Soon I will send the deeds that show that part of this land of Wm. Hoges  is owned by Martin Hewlett whose wife is Jane Moseley who was daughter of Mosely who married Martha Hodges.]   So I assume Hoges is same name as Hodges.]

****Also Martin Hewlett lived in 1800 census near  to Greens, Pleasant & Thomas Easley, John Bowlen & Obadiah Bowlen  & the Ayers folks - Wm. & Joseph Ayers,  also Hugh Roark.    I personally think this was perhaps Washington Dist. at the time.   Not positive about that.    Seems like I read it   someplace.    Remember Roarks connect to Joe. & Valentine Haley Bolling.

Here is a somewhat lengthy set of cut & pasted info info that does connect circumstantially my line of James Bolling & [& I think Doris'] to the Hodges of Bearskin Bollings.

My James Bolling lives in 1810 on land on 23 Mile River that had at one time belonged to Wm. Hodges who sold it to Jacob Phillips who sold it to my James Bolling in 1807.

In later deeds Martin Hewlett is even mentioned in some of the deeds of neighbors of my family.

Note - it is circumstantial....but still interesting and could be a clue.

Keep in mind that Charles Boling of Randolph Co., NC and Harrison Boling of Blount, TN have turned out not to be as closely related to Group 5 as we thought due to too many mismatches in the DNA. Both the Charles Boling & Harrison Boling testees matched 12/12 with Group 5, but as more markers were tested, it became apparent that any relationship, if it existed, is very, very distant. It's always possible there is a relationship via the female line though.

Until we get a DNA upgrade in the Cumberland, NC Bowling line and also the Joseph Bowling of Orange, IN, we can't know if a close match with Group 5 holds up or not. With the DNA revelations of late, I would hesitate to even try to categorize Bearskin Bollings as possibly Group 5 since we have no DNA at all from them!

Subject: [Bolling5] Group 5 Bollings -- Roundup

Group 5 Bollings

Goochland/Cumberland County, VA
Our earliest known ancestor seems to be James Bowling who in 1700 was delivered to New Kent County, VA by George Alves; he died in Goochland in 1729 and his estate was inventoried in 1730-1 by Stephen Hughes. James Bowling's wife was Mary whose maiden name is unknown. Records of his inventory are still extant [VA Library, Richmond]. It would appear James Bowling had at least  two sons who purchased land in Goochland shortly after he died: 1) James Bolling bought land in 1737 on Cooms/Grooms Quarter Branch in Goochland, later Cumberland County, and 2) Christopher Bolling  bought land in 1739 below Willis River, Goochland later Cumberland County.

Records indicate a William  Bolling/Bolding remained on Willis River ... quite likely near the original homestead ...now called  Cumberland County VA [wife named Ann], died leaving an "eldest" son named Thomas [wife named Agnes]. William's  widow, Ann, married secondly to Francis Amoss of Goochland. Connected to Thomas in some way [we believe] was Jesse Bowling, who  married Sarah Robertson/Robinson on 26 September  1785 in Cumberland Co., VA; this family moved to Mercer Co., WV. [Jesse' son, William Bowling married Elizabeth Perdue in Giles Co., VA on 30 May 1818.]
Brunswick/Lunenburg/Halifax/Pittsylvania/Henry/Patrick
In the early 1750's both Christopher Bolling and James Bolling moved to that part of Brunswick which became Lunenburg where James Bolling died in 1771-2 Pittsylvania leaving a will naming his wife and his children. See A.D. Smith's records here: http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=AHN&db=jrea&id=I0101
Christopher Bolling and wife Lydia, moved to Leatherwood on the Irwin/Smith River which later became Pittsylvania/ Henry County where he probably died about 1780. Christopher Bolling, Jr. lived on Jack's Creek. [John Bolling of Sullivan Co., TN and James Bolling bca 1756 of Clay Co., KY are likely from Christopher's line of Bollings.]
Brunswick/Lunenburg/Halifax County, VA
William Bowling appears in Brunswick County in 1739 witnessing a will of Bartholomew Robards;   John Bolding of Lunenburg worked for Adlar David in 1749 and they are connected in some way to William Bolling who is found living in Halifax County VA in 1769 with Micajah Sneed, near Difficult Creek. This line seems to be connected to Nathan Chapman who left a will naming his daughter Ann who married John Bowling. While Hazael believes this is her connection, we are unable to clearly connect them to Ann Pickens who married James Bolding; Ann Pickens Bolding is named in her father's will in Anderson Co., SC.   -- This line of Bollings were never in Pittsylvania/ Henry/Patrick Counties but rather seemed to move from Halifax Co., VA to SC near the Waxhaws [close to  Kershaw and Lancaster Counties of SC] and then on to the areas around Greenville, SC before moving to McMinn Co., TN.
Joseph Bowling who married Valentine Haley, daughter of David Haley who died in Anderson Co., TN where he left a will witnessed by a Thomas and Valentine Mayo. David Haley owned land on Chesnut Creek in Henry Co., VA in 1779.  A will is written and signed by  David Haley in 1806 but it appears in the Campbell Co. deed bk records where he named the following children son-in-law Joseph Boling his wife Volintain Boling, son-in-law Jason Cloud and wife Saley Cloud, son David Haley and Betsey his wife, son-in-laws and daughters William Witt and Elisabeth Witt, Silas Williams and Lucy Williams. He did not name his wife. Thomas and Valentine Mayo went on to Howard Co. MO, Valentine Mayo married two of John and Jane Farris McCulley's daughters. Joseph Bowling and Val are found in SC around 1790..... [off the top of my head] but moved to Anderson Co., TN as well. Doris and Diane have extensive records on the descendants of Joseph Bowling & Valentine Haley.
Other early Group 5 Bollings not yet connected are:
1) ORANGE CO., IN. Joseph Bowling/Bolling, Revolutionary War veteran,  died Jan. 30, 1836 in Orange Co., IN.  We've simply come to a dead end on this line.
2) HARNETT/CUMBERLAND CO., NC.  William Bowling of the Cape Fear region in Cumberland Co., NC [later Harnett], with sons William and James Bolin both leaving a will. James Bowling died 1843 Harnett Co. N.C. [James' son Daniel Bolin born Aug. 4, 1798 died Oct. 19, 1864 GA]. However, they connect to the Betheas who intermarry with a Godwin/Goodman line belonging to Yvonne. [I think].
3) RANDOLPH CO., NC.  John Graves and Margery Harvey lived on Bumper’s Fork of Little River in NC. (Randolph Co. Deed Bk. 14, p. 214) adjoining Leonard, Samuel, and William Bolling. We believe the Bollings of Randolph County belong to these Bollings whose earlier ancestor is not yet identified. However, they do connect to the Steeds of Halifax Co., VA.  [We desperately need the land records citing a creek for these Bollings in order to be helpful. ]
4) BLOUNT CO., TN.  Harrison Boling of Blount Co., TN, near Ellejoy.  Sheila writes: "Blount County, Tennessee, Deeds 1819-1833". It list a piece of land which was transferred to Harrison Boling on 29 Oct, 1835. The transfer was by William Gamble and William Wilson to settle the debt to Andrew Peery. Said Andrew Peery approved the transfer and agreed to wait an additional 11 months for his money (I assume that Harrison agreed to pay the debt for the land.) Harrison Boling died circa 1842/43. Andrew Peery and a witness to the sale, Thomas McKenry were two of his executors. I would like to know the disposition of the land. It is described as 2 acres on waters of Little River and Ellejoy Creek, beginning near the spring of John F. Garner, crossing the great road.

6)   LEE CO., VA --  WILLIAM BOWLING.  William Bowlin & Cynthia Hall, likely d/o John HALL, had 13 children. Sons were Hiram Crawford, b. 1839. David b. 1845, Toby b. 1861, & Henry b. 1870. Hiram Crawford married Emily Rutherford. They had 15 children. The boys were: Jerome b. 1859, Hiram Davis, b. 1861, William b. 1870, James Elbert b. 1873, Walter Cleo b. 1876, Joseph Steil b. 1879, Charles Walker b. 1880, David Tyee b.1883, & Joseph b. unknown. Most of the children of Hiram Crawford were born in Madison Co., Ky; Hiram BOWLIN & Emily are buried in Wallaceton Chapel Cemetery in Madison Co., KY.  See - http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/Melungeon/2002-01/1012344785 Note:  Because of the large number of Belchers in this area, my guess is that William Bowlin is a descendant of Jesse Bowling & Sarah Robinson/Robertson above. -- Ernie
1..William Bowlin born 1822 Lee Co. Va. married Cynthia Hall.
2....Rebecca Bowlin b. 1843 Lee Co. Va. married Martin C. Wolfe
3.....Harvey Holton Wolfe b. 1874 Lee Co. Va. married Rhoda C. Mink b. 1887 Rockastle Co. Ky

6..... Phillip Edwin Roberts b. 1968 Wise Co. Va.
7)  BEARSKIN BOLLINGS.  We do not have a DNA sample of these Bollings; however, they are likely Group 5. William Bolling & Nephany Hodges, d/o Jesse Hodges & Unknown, s/o Samuel Hodges & Nephany Walker of Goochland.  William Bolling was the son of John Bolling who left a will in 1834.
