[Bolling5] Group 5 Bollings -- Roundup - Bearskin Bollings

Ken,

The 67 marker test is not a necessity for some people. The 37 marker test will often tell you if you are in the ballpark or not, but if you have more than 5 mismatches on 37 markers as compared to someone else, it is considered by Family Tree DNA to be unrelated. The 67 marker test is for those who want to fine tune their markers to try to find others with the same or very similar signature. I do agree that the 12 marker test is pretty useless for genealogical purposes. It is very broad and was what was available in the beginning of DNA testing for genealogy. The science has progressed rapidly since then making more definitive testing available.

As Ernie said, we first find James Bolling, wife Mary and their likely sons, Christopher, James & William in Goochland County, VA in the 1730's - yes they are in the court records there and have land on Willis's creek and vicinity.

>From hat we are learning regarding DNA, it seems we must get the 67 test
or we know next to nothing. Is this a fact which all agree on?

Thus if the James Bolling d. 1729 m. Mary (James a young man) came in
1700 he must have married in VA and we ought to find his sons easily. By
the way if James came in about age 20 he died when about age 49. A very
young man who might well have left other children on the way up. Maybe 1
year olds. You see the point.

However the very thing we are missing here is a timeline. If Christopher
is agreed on to be a son what was the first record he left? Same for
James. The one set of books which might tell us just that are the 7
volumes of the Cavaliers and Pioneers. Everyone ought to study this.

I have in front of me volume 4 1732 - 1741. These are the English Land
grants and even the Bearskin Bollings were after land.

Bollings are mentioned nearly 60 times in the period 1732 - 1741. All of
the various DNA groups no doubt.Christopher is mentioned twice, a James 3
times, no William, no Thomas, but the John Bollings are mentioned no less
than 20 times.

A study of these records reveal more than one man named John Bolling
taking land, and a John Jr in 1733. Ken

This comes back to one thing. Find and prove your man on the land. That's
what I have done to the Montgomery Co. set out of Halifax Co. Do that in
every case and we clear up the Bollings.

So post where you have proven to on the land and put a name to it. And
his DNA to 67 markers. I think we are still treading water until we do
that.
