Ernie, The only thing that I can tell you about Joseph Dawson is that he was born abt 1728, the son of John Dawson (born 22 Jun 1683, Isle of Wight Virginia) and Rebecca Martin (no info on Rebecca). Joseph Dawson married Judith Dudley 20 Nov 1753, St. James Parish, Goochland, Virginia. Judith Dudley is the daughter of George Dudley and Judith Armistead. The George Dudley family (direct line) has been researched back to 15th century England. Judith Dudley was born about 1732 in Amherst County, Virginia. I do not have the names of her brothers and sister in my data base. Yvonne

  Yvonne --
I'm assuming this is your Cornelius. Cornelius Sale is found later in Amherst County, Virginia. He married in Amherst County, 20 October 1768, Jane Dawson, daughter of Joseph Dawson, formerly of Essex County, Virginia but Joseph lived in Amherst County at that time. Jane Dawson and Cornelius Sale later moved to Wilkes County, Georgia.

Now, can you tell me anything about Joseph Dawson? I just don't find him in Essex County.... my error?? Hazael has a close connection to the Dawsons in Halifax; perhaps not a direct connection, however. You'll notice that as you follow this family back in time, they connect to Joseph Collins -- and to the Wisdoms -- the same folks who connect to Group 7 Bollings!

Deed dated July 2, 1764, from Jacob Wright and wife, Elizabeth, of Amherst County to William Harris of Albemarle County, for £70 15 shillings, conveying 590 acres on North side and adjoining Rockfish, being part of 990 acres belonging to Jacob Writh. Witnesses were James Nevil, Matthew Tucker and JOSEPH DAWSON. Jacob Wright signed by his mark. Elizabeth Wright signed by her mark. Deed Book A, page 227, Amherst County, Virginia.

Did Joseph Dawson marry Judith Dudley? Henry Gatewood married Dorothy Dudley, d/o Richard Dudley & Elizabeth Saxe --- of Essex County, VA. Of course, those of us who are interested in Blevins -- there is a Gatewood Blevins!

  14. Richard Gatewood, born Abt. 1732 in King and Queen County, Virginia; died Abt. 1794 in Elbert County, Georgia. He was the son of 28. Henry Gatewood and 29. Dorothy Dudley. He married 15. Elizabeth Foster Abt. 1760 in Amherst County, Virginia. 15. Elizabeth Foster, born Abt. 1744 in Amherst County, Virginia; died 1807 in Elbert County, Georgia. She was the daughter of Edmund Foster and Tabitha Collins, d/o Joseph Collins and Susanna Lewis.

Virginia County Records SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY 1721-1800 WILLS: WILL BOOK B 1749-1759, page 10: "COLLINS, JOSEPH, Spotsylvania Co., d. Aug. —, 1757, p. Nov. 1, 1757.

(Page 329)."

The 1757 will of Joseph Collins states that if his wife remarries his estate is to be sold and divided among his sons and daughters, one of which was Tabitha Gatewood. Orange Co. Virginia Families by Brockman.

He died August 1759. Will dated November 1st, 1757. Birth: 1687 in Of Isle Of Wight, or K&Q,VA.
