[Bolling5] What do you make of these Bouldings in McMinn?

Diane,

Something that Doris sent today mentions a fence around the Blevins family
cemetery.   Perhaps that is the one that Joel contributed to.

Hazael,

No proof that’s who Joel is, just like a lot of stuff we do, we have to try to
figure out what the situation might be. It’s also possible Joel was a son of
John Jr.  We don’t know the names of John Jr’s children, so that is certainly a
possibility.  Joel witnesses several deeds in Feb. 1835 along with William D.
Blevins – the deeds involve John Jr., John Sr. & Isaac. An indenture from 1838
with Benj. Beeler putting up $500 to guarantee the appearance of John (Jr.?) who
is in jail – this must be like bail money Beeler put up. John (Sr?), Tolliver,
Isaac & Joel all put up land & livestock as collateral, to guarantee that John
Jr will make his appearance in court or they are obliged to turn these assets
over to Beeler. I guess if Joel was not in the immediate family, he might not be
likely to put up valuable collateral like that. That lends some credence to his
possibly being the son of John Jr.

The only James I know of is Larkin’s son James. Larkin is a son of John Bolin,
Sr. James Bolin was born in 1827 & went with his father & family to Indiana when
they moved there before 1850.  James Bolin died in the Civil War at Knoxville,
TN on 13 Dec. 1863. I have never seen a document in Sullivan County with a James
mentioned so would like to see it if it exists.

By Bolling Cemetery, are you speaking of Rooty Branch Cemetery where many of the
Bolins are buried? I don’t know of a Bolling Cemetery. I also don’t recall
Kathryn saying that Joel helped fence a cemetery. Do you have that somewhere?

Is there a document that proves that?   If so is there a James too...as I am
pretty sure Kathryn  states that Joel helped to fence the Bolling cemetery in
Sullivan Co. Tenn.

Yes, Joel was likely the son of Joe/Val. Makes me think Joseph and John might be
brothers.

One last comment on the records of Sullivan Co. TN, John Bolin.  The Joel is not
a son, but is believed to be a son of Joseph/Val. Or that is my latest
understanding? No.

Hazael & Doris,

I will have to disagree that John Bolin of Sullivan was married twice and had 2
families. The birthdates of the children in the 2 families in question overlap
with each other so a virtual impossibility. Also, if they all had the same
father, the places where the two families lived would overlap and both family
members would appear in some documents together and they do not. John of
Sullivan was never in South Carolina, nor Alabama. He was born 1760 in Henry, VA
(then Pittsylvania he believed as told to him by his parents), he then went to
Montgomery, VA ca 1780, then to Sullivan, TN (per his Rev. War pension) where he
remained. There is no doubt a close relationship between your lines (especially
yours, Hazael) and John of Sullivan County, but that definite link remains to be
discovered yet. My guess is that the connection goes back to Henry, VA.

Deeds in 1835 & 1838 both specifically name Elizabeth as the wife of John Bolin
Sr. and that they were to remain in their house with a garden spot as long as
they lived, and then the property would transfer to Benjamin Beeler. The deeds
involved John Bolin Jr. and also Isaac, Tolliver and Joel signed.

Here are the birthdates of John of Sullivan’s children (from census data):
1) John Jr. b. 1780-1790 (he was continually in Sullivan Co. from an 1812 tax
list until the 1840 census – his children are unknown, but he had at least 5
children: a daughter & 4 sons born between 1810 and 1830. I think he died bef.
1850 –at least he doesn’t appear in the 1850 census.)
2) Isaac b. 1795 in TN - married to Susannah & 2nd to a Harriet and had at least
7 children)
3) Larkin b. 1800 in TN – married to a Sarah & had at least 7 children b. bet.
1815-1835. This family moved to Indiana between 1840-1850.
4) Elizabeth b. 1802 – married to Joseph Offield. Elizabeth died sometime after
1880. The Offields had a lot of children.
5) Tolliver b. 1804 & d. 1871 – married to Telitha (McGee?). One son named
Larkin who married Jane Stewart.
Possible 6th child of John Sr:
Calloway b. 1808 & d. 1860-1870. Married to Susan Carrier. They had a lot of
children. I seriously doubt if he is a son of John Sr. since Calloway does not
appear in any document with John Bolin Sr or the other children of his, that I
am aware of. He may be another line entirely or a relative somehow of John Sr.
-
The 16 children of John Bolling b. 1756 & Mary Tarpley per Doris’s gedcom file
were born between 1778-1804. I believe this list of children was from Zelma
Price’s book and info? These dates conflict with the dates John Sr’s known
children were born.

Another discrepancy: John T. Bolding would have been born earlier than Zelma’s
record says. Census data has him born 1765-1770 & dying between 1840-1849 in
Alabama. Zelma has him being born 1778.

The dates between these two families just don't jibe. The answer to this puzzle
is elsewhere, not in merging these 2 families. I don’t mean to cause any
difficulties with anyone, but facts have to be looked as they stand.

If the pension of John Bolin Sr. of Sullivan hasn’t already been posted on the
Bolling5 document page, I will do so. These are the actual images of the
original documents. It’s in a pdf format.

Please send me photo copies since I match 67/67 to these families.   Also...can
you resend the descendant who was tested?  His family tree?

When something doesn’t fit or seem correct, I don’t sleep well, ha.
So I went digging into my binder which sits on the shelf with what I’ve
collected.  So here it is

A report by Sandra Eggers in her report shared with me does give Tolliver
Boling’s wife name as Telitha McGee.  Sandra is a single individual who has done
a great job gathering information of the descendants of John Bolling of Sullivan
Co. TN.  She even names who she believes to be his father: William as well as a
brother named William.  Both William b 1757 and John b 1759 in Henry Co.VA.
Sandra is a descendant to the Isaac s/o John b. 1759.  She has well documented
her report which she shared with me.

Another descendant of Isaac s/o John b. 1759 is Patti Unvericht.  Patti’s report
seems to be close to that of what we know from Kathryn McKown.

Two rather informative reports to have for the Sullivan Co. TN families.
Doris

Diane – I’m like you I must have gotten the information from one of two sources,
either Kathryn McKnow or the gal who believes as I do that John Bolin Sullivan
Co TN had two wives and two families, or my third theory is that the wife’s full
name is Mary Elizabeth Tarpley.  I believe also that the John Jr. is the one who
went to Franklin Co. Al if he isn’t the guy back in SC in 1820, who went
directly to Franklin Co. AL.  The later belief here is my strongest one at this
point, because my Hiram with wife Mary Pleasants Bolling went directly to
Franklin from Rutherford Co. NC before 1830, as did brother Moses with wife
Sarah Pleasants Bolling followed there from McMinn Co. TN.  Moses’ oldest, 1st
child Joseph Alexander Weatherbee was born in McMinn 1823.  Moses’ first dau. Is
the one who marries my Harrison Sparks Bolding as his first wife.

Hope this helps, but I can’t swear as to Talitha being Miller or who?  I do have
a 2nd great grandfather William Miller, parents I know nothing of.

Doris
