Also, keep in mind that Thomas T. Cooper & Elizabeth Rea’s son, John Cooper is the guy who married Nancy Bolling, dau. of John Bolling and Rebecca Rea. Nancy had the son Benjamin before she married John Cooper. Benjamin Bolling, son of Nancy, MAY have been fathered by John Ayres, but it’s not proven.

This appears to me to be the “rich” Thomas Cooper that Mike is referring to, which makes sense if he was friends or relatives of the Anthonys and the Clarks, as they were wealthy families.

The man associated with the Rea family was Thomas T. Cooper. He married Elizabeth Rea ca. 1780. She was a sister to Rebecca Rea, wife of John Bolling, son of James & Elizabeth Bolling of Pittsylvania County (DNA Group 5).

I think A.D. was right – he knew of no connection between these 2 Thomas Coopers. I will post A.D.’s notes on Thomas T. Cooper in another email.

Ernie:

Some of my Thomas Cooper information has come to me via a 4th cousin, Dr. Donald Yates, who is President of DNA Consultants and who is also a Cooper descendant and has done some pretty extensive research on the line. I'm not sure I've mentioned this before, but Thomas Cooper was a close friend, business associate, and neighbor of Gen. Joseph Martin

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Martin_(general) , both in Henry Co., VA and earlier in frontier NC/TN.

I would say that the best info I've relied upon for Thomas Cooper and Joseph Anthony is here: http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/r/o/w/Barbara-Ellen-Rowe/GENE3-0038.html

I can't say that I've read the actual will or even the Henry Co. will book entry but, according to this transcript, Joseph Anthony names Thomas Cooper as one of his executors along with his wife and sons. Anthony also names "Sarah Cooper" as one of his children in the will.
As you probably know there is a raging controversy over the true maiden name of Sarah Anthony Cooper's grandmother Penelope, married to Christopher Clark. Some say Penelope was a Bolling (specifically, the daughter of John Bolling) and others say she was a Johnson. I've also seen Massey/Massie as a possible surname.
Personally, I've believed Penelope was a Bolling (of some sort) and I believe those who claim Johnson as her maiden name are confusing her with Penelope, the daughter of Joseph Anthony and Elizabeth Clark, who did marry a Johnson. I wonder if your story of Christopher Clark loaning a large amount of money to James Bowling adds creedance to the theory that Penelope, wife of Christopher Clark, was a Bolling. It sounds as though they would have likely been related unless Christopher was a very trusting and generous fellow!

There are quite a few researchers, including Donald Yates, who believe these Coopers are related to Anthony Ashley-Cooper, Earl of Shaftesbury, Lord High Chancellor, and Lord Proprietor of the Carolinas but I haven't been able to prove that.

I can't begin to tell you how important the Thomas Cooper connection to the Anthony's is. As you know, they connect to Christopher Clark who loaned James Bowling d1731 an inordinate amont of money before James died. Stephen Hughes and James Nevill were administrators of his estate, and Stephen Hughes brother [Ashford] also loaned this James Bowlling money -- subsequently sued him whereupon James died. About 10 years later, Ashford sold land to Christopher Bolling at a very reasonable price.

A.D. Smith researched this Thomas Cooper/Rea/Bolling line and couldn't make a connection to the "rich" Thomas Cooper. Can you give us the documentation, please?

Joyce is our Heard researcher. Perhaps she can identify these Heards mentioned in this Goode citation.

  Ernie:

"William Good" might be "William Goad" as mentioned but there is also a Goode/Good family connected to our Henry Co., VA group.
My ancestor Thomas Cooper was named executor of the will of John Goode (sometimes it shows up as Good) dated May 16, 1779, in Henry Co., VA :

  P. 28-29 - JOHN GOODE,
of Henry County, being sick and weak in body, dated May 16, 1779.
To Frances my well beloved wife all my estate lands and tenements, all my household goods
and moveables, during her widowhood, and if she marries to have a child's part. At her
decease or marriage, to my children William Goode, Sary Goode, Nancy Goode, Thomas Goode,
John Goode, Martha Goode, Jessee Goode.
Ex.: William Hunter and Thomas Cooper
  Sig.: John Goode
Wit: William Heard, John Heard, William Estes. Dec. 26, 1779; Exhibited by Thos. Cooper and
Wm. Hunter who gave bond with Wm. Estes and William Heard, their securities.

Also, I thought I would mention that my 5th great grandfather Thomas Cooper married 3rd, Sarah Clark Anthony, daughter of Joseph Anthony and Elizabeth Clark of Goochland Co., VA.
