[Bolling5] David Haley - Joseph Bowling

I have a set of photo copies from a book in the Dallas Public Library called Pittsylvania Co. VA Plat Books. It has the land surveys and their drawings. In that book there is a Bollings creek....and as I am remembering it it crosses the Marrowbone. That is in the far left hand sw corner of Henry Co. VA. Not close to Balls/or Falls Creek at all.
NOW>...just where did I file that map? I will try to look for it to help solve this issue. The issue being just which land a William and subsequently his brother John inherited from James Bolling who died 1771/2, I know I sent copies of A.D. and to Ernie, and to Doris but perhaps you were not with us then Diane.

Thanks, Ernie. I was thinking I’d seen some land references to David Haley referring to Chestnut Creek, but I couldn’t find them yesterday. I wonder if this is David the father or David the son? I looked at Chestnut creek on the topo map and there are several branches – all of them up in Franklin County so some distance from Bowins Creek where Joseph obtained the 47 acres from David Haley.
I took another look at the map and Bowins Creek is barely in Henry County in the NW corner by Fairystone State Park. I looked at the map wrong yesterday when I thought it looked like it was in Patrick. Bowins Creek is an arm of Philpot Reservoir now. Town Creek is farther north in NW Henry County, near the Patrick line – part of it is up in Franklin County. One difference I see in the citations you provided, Joseph’s land is at the HEAD of Chestnut Creek, and the other two are on BRANCHES of Chestnut Creek. This might be some distance from each other & from Bowins Creek. Chestnut Creek does not go into Henry County at all.
Another point, the Joseph Bowling land at the HEAD of Chestnut Creek does not adjoin David Haley. The headwaters would be where Chestnut Creek rises, not where it flows into Town Creek. (am I right in my thinking there?) I did not see where the headwater was on the map, but would appear not to be close to Bowins Creek.
My guess would still be that our Joseph Bowling was the guy on Bowins Creek (when Harrison Hobard sold it later, the deed said “where Joseph Bowling used to live”). I’m still thinking the Chestnut Creek Joseph might be Joseph Bouldin. Why wouldn’t Valentine have relinquished her dower when this land was sold to John Cox as she should have?
Diane
