Ernie & all,
In both transcriptions I have of James Bowling’s will, it says “Bowling Creek”, not Bowens Creek. It’s not the same Creek. There is no record of James buying land on Bowens Creek either, nor on a Bowling Creek. He does acquire land on Ball Creek, Turkeycock and the Smith, all adj. or near Merry Webb. Ball Creek does not appear in present day Henry County list of creeks, probably meaning it was a small creek that has disappeared as a named creek. I believe that this Ball Creek would likely be the one they called Bowling Creek.
These are the only land records for James in Pittsylvania (now Henry) County:
Halifax/Pittsylvania Counties, VA
[12 May 1755] James Bolling, 400 ac, Begin: On Mery Webb's Line on Turkey Cock of Irwin River thence up both sides.
James Bolling - 109 acres, Turkey Cock Cr., 20 Oct. 1755, Survey, 166 R [Note: this is in present day SE Henry County, VA. Turkeycock is just east of present day Ridgeway which is south of Martinsville.]
[7 Apr 1762] (Surv.d pr. J.D.) James Bowling 400 Acs. on So. Side Smiths Rr. Beg. on Merry Webs Lower Cor. Th.e on his Lines.
James Bowling - 204 acres Ball Cr. of Smith River, 7 April 1762, Transfer, Survey [Note: this is in present day Henry County, VA.]
Title Stallings, Jacob. Publication 1 February 1781. Location: Henry County. Description: 204 acres on both sides of Balls Creek of Smiths River adjoining Merray Webb. Source: Land Office Grants C, 1780-1781, p. 16 (Reel 44). [Note: this is James Bolling's land that he obtained as follows: James Bowling - 204 acres Ball Cr. of Smith River 7 April 1762.]
--
What I highlighted in red is what I believe is the land that James left to son William and then John got it as William’s heir at law. John & Rebecca sold their land they bought from Merry Webb to Jacob Stallings, and it makes sense John would have transferred his inherited land to Jacob Stallings as well (the land on Ball Creek), as in the above land grant for Jacob Stallings.
--
Joseph Bowling did transfer his land on Bowens Creek, that is the land that he was assigned by David Haley, to Harrison Hobard:
Henry County, VA Surveyors Book #1, Part 2:
Page 293
1 May 1784
Surveyed for Joseph Bowland 47 acres of Land by Warrant Baring date the 28th June 1782. [survey symbol here] Assignee of David Haily who was Assignee of Joseph Webster who was assignee of Peter Saunders on the North side of Smiths River & Bounded as follows (to wit) Beginning at a white Walnut tree on the said River at the mouth of Bowins Creek thence New line S 13 degrees E 64 poles to a pine S 47 degrees W 24 poles to a Gum S 45 degrees E 66 poles to a Chesnut tree on the Cone? branch of said River thence down the same as it meanders N 44 degrees 20 poles N 85 degrees E 21 poles N 31 degrees E 36 poles crossing said branch to a white oak East 19 poles to a white oak S 75 degrees E 37 poles to a white oak S 61 degrees & 30 E14 poles to a Chesnut tree S 82 degrees E 18 poles to a Locust tree S 63 degrees E 18 poles to a Maple on a branch thence down the same as it meanders North 4 poles to the said River thence up the Same as it meanders to the first Station.
VG Dickenson asst to
John Dickenson
The above is part of a Warrant assigned to Peter Saunders for 500.
Signed: Joseph Bowland
Transferd to Harrison Hubbard by verbil orders
{A small map drawing shows this 47 acres on the north side of the Smith River on a branch. Transcribed from copy of original obtained at the Henry Co, VA courthouse by Diane Jones}
Note: When a grant was transferred, the transaction didn’t appear in the county court deed records – it was strictly a transaction in Virginia’s land grant system. – DJ.

As I have said before, Bowens creek is barely into Henry County in the far NW part of the county, and it is possible that it rises in Patrick County, so the Bowens creek in John’s list in Henry & Patrick both is probably the same creek.
Marrowbone & Turkeycock & presumably Ball Creek are in the SE portion of Henry County where Merry Webb lived.

Diane et al --
There is much confusion over this/these creek/creeks. Can't we agree on thiat.
James Bolling [1771/2] in his will states that he's giving William his land on Bowing creek; that land was given to John Bolling because William was killed in the Rev War. I also believe James lived on Marrowbone himself, but owned land on Bowing Creek. The citation below between Gilliam and David Haley clearly says Bowing's Creek. So the problem before us is to determine which one. Incidentally there were absolutely no Bowin/Bowens in Pittsylvania/Henry/Patrick until after 1800, so they are not the namesake.
If you look at what John Webb sent, there is a Bowin/Bowen/Bowing Creek in Patrick and Henry County and one in Pittsylvania, different spelling I believe. Here's something from Patrick Couinty files:
Bowens/Boings/Bowans Creek USGS Philpott Lake 223, 224, 225, 226, 227, 229,
230, 335, 379, 485
Jacob ADAMS; ANGLIN; Richard BAKER; Charles COLLIER; Joseph CUMMINGS;
Moses GODARD; Harrison HUBBARD/HUBBERT; William, Zachariah KING;
Bennett, Elisabeth, Humphry POSEY; RICHMOND; John SMALLMAN;
William TANZEY
I've highlighted Harrison Hubbard because the VA Patents shows him Harrison Hubboard buying land on Bowing Creek on the north side of Smiths Cr. in 1785. Harrison is connected to the Phillpots --- as in Phillpot Lake.
If we consider that James [1771/2] gave his son John, land on Bowing Creek and it's in Patrick Co., VA near Phillpot lake, that puts him near Christopher Jr's land on Jack's Creek. John Hubboard {1828) bought land on Jill's Creek in Patrick County. I do not know the connection between Harrison Hubbard and John Hubbard.

Ernie,
No, I don’t agree that James Bowling’s land was on Bowens Creek. Joseph’s land was, but not James’. James most definitely lived over in the Marrowbone area of SE Henry county when he died. His land was always adjoining Merry Webb, not David Haley. His will said land on Bowling Creek, not Bowens Creek.
The date of Joseph Bowling’s survey on Bowens Creek was 1784. James was already dead by this time.
Here is that 1770 tithe list from SE Henry county area shortly before James died:
1770 Titable list of Pittsylvania County, VA, published in Southside Virginian, Vol. 4, No. 3, pp 108-109; Vol. 5 pp 91-94, 167-170; Vol 6 pp. 772-776; Vol. 7 pp 133-135
Vol 5, pp 92-94

Diane --
It looks like David Haley's wife didn't sign this deed. It looks like they say David's land was on Bowings/Bowing Creek. {Same creek mentioned in James Bolling's will [1771/72]. Again, what was the date of Joseph Bolling's land sale? Michael Rowland witnessed this; John Rowland lived next to John/James Blevins [can't remember which].

There was recent discussion about creek names in Virginia, and a good
link to find them is at
http://www.clocations.com/clist.aspx?list=caty&state=VA&caty=Stream
There is a Bolin Branch in Pittsylvania County near Chatham, and a
Bolling Branch in Fauquier County.
