I actually don’t know if the Amoss family had anything to do with the Amis
family who are associated with the Bowlings later. We have wondered that, but
Thomas Amis of Big Creek, Hawkins, TN was in Bladen Co., NC as a younger man
before going to Tennessee, and that is where his son John (who married Caty
Bowling) is said to have been born. From what I have heard their name was
pronounced like “Amy”.
I think John Bolling of Henrico was actually a Colonel and not a Major.

I hadn't even thought that the Amoss mentioned was actually Amis which we've
discussed before connected to Bolling in TN. That makes sense!
I can't believe that the "Major Bolling" mentioned on p.31 of the Southam Parish
Vestry is referring to the servant we discussed or something really weird is
going on. The individuals mentioned with him are powerful, large landowners or
at least the ones I recognize. George Carrington (1711-1785) was married to Ann
Mayo and their son Paul married into the Clement Read family of Charlotte Co.,
VA. The Hughes were big landowners and I'm pretty sure the Robert Carter
mentioned is connected to the Robert "King" Carter line.
Here's a good listing of various Hughes transactions in Goochland Co. :
http://genforum.genealogy.com/hughes/messages/10838.html
In particular there's this one for 400 acres between Ashford Hughes and Daniel
Price (related to my Prices) adjacent to John Bolling and Robert Carter. I'm
quite certain the Major Bolling on p. 31 of the Vestry orders is actually John
Bolling of Henrico Co.
ASHFORD HUGHES & Daniel Price, 400 acs. (N.L.) Goochland Co., S. side James
Riv., bet. Muddy Cr. & Willis Riv., alias Willis Cr., adj. John Bolling in
Benjamin Harrison's line & Robert Carter; 11 Apr. 1732, p. 403. 40 Shill.
(Note, this property was adj. John Bolling. I'm not sure if John Bolling was one
of the descendants of Pocahontas or one of the other Bollings...bh)
Right after this one there is another transaction for 400 acres involving John
Pleasants.
