Folks,

In going through the box of documents that I got 2 years ago and then
forgot
about, here are some tidbits:

from Goochland County Order Book? 5 1741-1745
p.ii
?
Under a chapter beginning The Court extended its protection to women,
orphans,
and servants:

-mention of how it  helped Mary Napier who was beaten by her husband;

-"Joseph Jackson was chastised by the Court for his 'immoderate
correction' of
his servant John Mcguire and was threatened with the loss of the servant
if he
gave the servant 'the like correction again.'[p.12]

Then from [p. 464] "servant Major Bolling [a rather unusualname] had 25
days
added to his service for absenting himself from his mater Joseph Jackson."

Hazael's comment:?? The comment about an unusual name is that of the
editor of
this court order book of Goochland county - NOT MINE!??? However, having
seen
the name listed in some deeds in other counties...maybe Albemarle or
Amherst....as just major Bolling....it makes me wonder if this servant man
has
not been confused at times with the other Major John
Bolling....andinterpreted
as one and the same from time to time.

This same court book contains our deeds from Stephen Hughes - and
Christopher
Bolling and wife Lydia to James Bolling.?

Then from

?Cumberland Co. VA? Court Order Books 1767-1787 by Roger G. Word,
copyrighted

?
Ann Amos produced into court a register whereby it appears that Thomas
Bolling
her son was born 24 October 1750.?[Hazael's comment:? so she is proving he
is
about 21 years of ago.]? Perhaps this age will help us know if he is the
Thomas
Bolling who later shows up at Bever Creek Church in Henry/Pittsylvania Co.
 VA.

appointed guardian of the other children as there are others implied in
the
statement of "eldest son" and heir.]

Sorry, Diane, I don?t have any clue.? The name, John B Bourland, could be
of
interest, however.? I have the dau of my Peter William Patterson married
to a
John B B???? It gets spelled different ways.? He isn?t with her in any
census,
but her headstone give her name as the wife of JB Boyln or some such.?
I?ve
never been able to truly identify just who her husband really is.

Doris,
?
I would generally agree with that, however your John is listed as John
Bowling,
not Bourland in that census. The other guys on that page are all listed as
Bourlands, and they could very well be Bourlands. I don?t know who these
Bourlands are, do you have any idea Doris? The Jas. Bourland is not
Hazael?s as
her guy was still in McMinn, TN in 1830.

I?ve followed this discussion on the Bourlands well and good, I just have
a
question:? What about the Bourlands who are in Franklin Co. AL for 1830??
Personally I believe it?s a case of the census taker?s own spelling of the
name
that belongs to the individuals.? These are the listings:

Most of the Bourlands are Y-DNA tested to 67 markers.? The ones that
tested to
37 markers know just where they fit in because of their paper trails.? Say
for
instance, two brothers, one tests to 67 markers and the other test for 37
markers.? They match at the 37 markers, they are brothers, so why would
both
test to 67 markers.? Although Larry placed all of us in Group 4, not a ONE
of us
even matches at 12 markers.? For sure, they are not related to Group 5 or
to any
of MY relatives.? Then there is the Family Finder Test that proves our
connection with others of Group 5.? We match, 65/67 markers(Family Tree)
and one
Sorenson match, to two descendants of Robert Bullington(Pittsylvania
County,
VA).? Ann Bowling (of Pittsylvania county, Sullivan County, and Lee
County)is
the mtDNA line.? She is Group 5 Bowling.
?
One census in Clay County(1920), my grandfather was listed as Bowland.?
Might
depend on your accent and the census speller.

If these Bourlands are related to the Bourland DNA group, they are Group
4.
Arvina is knowledgeable about them, but for sure, they aren?t related to

Here is some info from the Bourland site:? Please note areas that mine and
Doris' line share an interest:? First going down is Bnjamin Bourland
married in
1798 in Laurens Co. SC.? but notice he died in Fannin Co. Texas which is
also
where my Bolding's lived.? Mine were there then too I believe.?? Also note
further down this family moved to Franklin Co. Alabama....exactly where
mine and
Doris' lines were....and note that one of them lived in Pontotoc where
Doris'?
James P. bolding lived.
?
It is just uncanny how many places that our lines lived adjacent to this
family.?? Gabriel Bourland intermarried with the Hester family that also
interconnects to mine and Doris' extended families.?

Ebenezer BOURLANDwas born about 1768 in Wilkes, NC. He died in 1842 in
Franklin
Co., AR. He was buried in Bourland Cemetery, Lone Elm, AR. Surnames:
Bourland,
Loving, Bolin, Hibbs, Laffoon

The following was taken from "The Bourlands in America" by Carl and
May Read:

Ebenezer J. Bourland, arbitrarily listed as fifth child of "Immigrant"
John Bourland, was born about 1768 in Virginia. He moved with his
parents before the Revolution to Salisbury District, North Carolina,
where he married a girl from the Yadkin River area of that state in
1790. His bride, Abigail Loving, sister to Mary Loving who had married
John Bourland, Junior, was born about 1776. Ebenezer soon loaded his
belongings and his young bride into his wagon and moved to Pendleton
District, South Carolina, where the census of 1800 shows him as head
of household with a wife and another female born between ages 16 and
26 (one may have been a sister or a sister-in-law) and four boys under
age 10 and 2 girls under age 10. Some of the children may have been
nephews, nieces of his. John Bourland was also living in that area and
in his house was a woman listed as "over 45 years" -- who may have
been the widow of John Bourland Senior. The surnames were spelled
"Bolin", but land grant records and other court documents prove that
both John and Ebenezer Bourland lived in this part of South Carolina
in 1800.

South Carolina could not hold Ebenezer for long. He seems to have
moved back to North Carolina for a brief stay before moving to
Kentucky, where he had claimed 200 acres of prime farm land on the
waters of Clear Creek, Henderson County, KY, in 1804. Here he farmed
and won the respect of his neighbors and was appointed to the position
of Justice of the Peace, Hopkins County, shortly after that county was
formed in 1806. By 1815, however, Ebenezer was again stricken with a
yen for far away places. An entry in the Minute Book, Vol. III, August
session 1815 reads: "Ebenezer Bourland, Esq., came into Court and
resigned his Office of Justice of Peace in this County." He moved to
Christian County, KY, but remained little more than a year before
heading southwest to settle in Franklin County, Alabama. A land
transaction recorded in Hopkins County, KY 26 Sep 1818 notes:
"Ebenezer Bourland of Alabama Territory, Franklin County, sold to
Nathan Hibbs of Hopkins County for $80 on Flat Creek 40 acres." He had
already sold 170 acres in 1815 to William Laffoon for $600. In the
first transaction Ebenezer signed his name and Abigail signed with her
mark.

Alabama was not to be the last stop for Ebenezer. He appears on the
federal census of 1820 and 1830 in Franklin County, AL, but at some
point between 1830 and 1836 he moved once again to the west, settling
in Franklin County, Arkansas, first in Lone Elm and later in an
unincorporated community called White Oak, officially, and dubbed
"Bourland Crossroads" by the local residents. He farmed here with his
son, Henderson, until about 1842, when he died. He is buried on what
used to be Henderson Bourland's farm. His grave is not marked. Abigail
lived on until 1866 and her grave is marked with a stone which reads:
"GRANDMA". This little burial place is all but forgotten and will
disappear if it is not soon reclaimed. It contains about twenty graves
in addition to those of Abigail and Ebenezer.

May have been in VA Parents:John BOURLANDand Katherine RANDOLPH.
Spouse: Abigail LOVING. Ebenezer BOURLAND and Abigail LOVING were married
about
1790. Children were: James Spear BOURLAND.

Elizabeth and Francis were listed as living in Calloway Co., KY where
at least eight of their ten known children were born. They were listed
in both the 1830 and 1840 federal census of Calloway Co., KY.

children were born. Francis was one of the founders of the City of
Benton KY.

They moved to southeastern Logan Co., ILL. about 1856-58, as they were
listed in the 1860 federal census in Lake Fork Twp, Logan Co., ILL
Francis purchased land in Macon Co., ILL just west of Niantic in Jan.
1857, but it is not known when he moved there. Elizabeth died about 15
Mar 1864 in Logan or Macon Co., ILL; Francis died 03 Jan 1866.,
probably in Logan Co. as he was listed in 1865 state census there.

Thanks, Hazael. We have had some of this stuff on Thomas Bolling for
awhile, but I?ve never been able to definitely connect him to the Henry county
Thomas Bolling. I am of the opinion they are one and the same, but haven?t
found proof.

Here is what I found on Joseph Carrington:
Theodosia Mosby 1 (Benjamin Mosby , Sarah Woodson , Robert , John ) was
born in 1742 in New Kent Co., VA. She died in 1790 in Cumberland Co., VA. She
was buried in "Mansion House", Burial Ground, Cumberland Co., VA.

The Carrington Family of VA, from Ntl. Gen. Soc. Quarterly, Vol. 70
(1982), p. 265: Theodosia was the dau. of Benjamin and Mary (Poindexter) Mosby of
Cumberland Co., VA.

Theodosia married Col. Joseph Carrington son of Col. George Carrington
and Ann Mayo on 15 Dec 1763 in Cumberland Co., VA. Joseph was born on 6 Feb
1741/1742 in of Cumberland, VA. He died on 4 Apr 1802. He was buried in
"Mansion House" Burial Ground, Cumberland Co., VA.

The Carrington Family of VA, from Ntl. Gen. Soc. Quarterly, Vol.70 (1982),
p. 265.
Joseph was a justice of the peace, vestryman, Capt. of a Cumberland Co.
militia co., Col. in Militia. Left will, probated 23 May 1802, Cumberland
Co., VA. Residence was called "Mansion House Plantation," Cumb. Co.

==
Note that the Mosbys were connected to the Michaux family ? Littleberry
Mosby Jr. married Judith Michaux in 1771 in Cumberland, she was the dau. of
Jacob Michaux and Judith Woodson. I?m not sure what the relationship is
between Theodosia Mosby and Littleberry Mosby, but they are related somehow as
I found them in the same tree.

As to the servant Major Bolling, he could be mixed up with Major John
Bolling in some records, but most of the documents I?ve seen are deeds or land
grants for large land holdings. It seems implausible that an indentured
servant who is beaten by his master could become a large land owner.

Subject: [Bolling5] New Tid Bits from Goochland/Cumberland Co. VA Records

Folks,

In going through the box of documents that I got 2 years ago and then
forgot about, here are some tidbits:

from Goochland County Order Book 5 1741-1745
p.ii

Under a chapter beginning The Court extended its protection to women,
orphans, and servants:

-mention of how it helped Mary Napier who was beaten by her  husband;

-"Joseph Jackson was chastised by the Court for his 'immoderate
correction' of his servant John Mcguire and was threatened with the loss of the
servant if he gave the servant 'the like correction again.'[p.12]

Then from [p. 464] "servant Major Bolling [a rather unusualname] had 25
days added to his service for absenting himself from his mater Joseph
Jackson."

Hazael's comment: The comment about an unusual name is that of the
editor of this court order book of Goochland county - NOT MINE! However,
having seen the name listed in some deeds in other counties...maybe Albemarle
or Amherst....as just major Bolling....it makes me wonder if this servant
man has not been confused at times with the other Major John
Bolling....andinterpreted as one and the same from time to time.

This same court book contains our deeds from Stephen Hughes - and
Christopher Bolling and wife Lydia to James Bolling.

Then from

Ann Amos produced into court a register whereby it appears that Thomas
Bolling her son was born 24 October 1750. [Hazael's comment: so she is
proving he is about 21 years of ago.] Perhaps this age will help us know if he
is the Thomas Bolling who later shows up at Bever Creek Church in
Henry/Pittsylvania Co. VA.

Sorry, Diane, I don?t have any clue. The name, John B Bourland, could be
of interest, however. I have the dau of my Peter William Patterson married
to a John B B??? It gets spelled different ways. He isn?t with her in
any census, but her headstone give her name as the wife of JB Boyln or some
such. I?ve never been able to truly identify just who her husband really is.

Doris,

I would generally agree with that, however your John is listed as John
Bowling, not Bourland in that census. The other guys on that page are all
listed as Bourlands, and they could very well be Bourlands. I don?t know who
these Bourlands are, do you have any idea Doris? The Jas. Bourland is not
Hazael?s as her guy was still in McMinn, TN in 1830.

I?ve followed this discussion on the Bourlands well and good, I just have
a question: What about the Bourlands who are in Franklin Co. AL for 1830?
Personally I believe it?s a case of the census taker?s own spelling of the
name that belongs to the individuals. These are the listings:

A.M Bourland

James

Most of the Bourlands are Y-DNA tested to 67 markers. The ones that
tested to 37 markers know just where they fit in because of their paper trails.
Say for instance, two brothers, one tests to 67 markers and the other test
for 37 markers. They match at the 37 markers, they are brothers, so why
would both test to 67 markers. Although Larry placed all of us in Group 4,
not a ONE of us even matches at 12 markers. For sure, they are not related
to Group 5 or to any of MY relatives. Then there is the Family Finder
Test that proves our connection with others of Group 5. We match, 65/67
markers(Family Tree) and one Sorenson match, to two descendants of Robert
Bullington(Pittsylvania County, VA). Ann Bowling (of Pittsylvania county,
Sullivan County, and Lee County)is the mtDNA line. She is Group 5 Bowling.

One census in Clay County(1920), my grandfather was listed as Bowland.
Might depend on your accent and the census speller.

If these Bourlands are related to the Bourland DNA group, they are Group
4. Arvina is knowledgeable about them, but for sure, they aren?t related to
Group 5.

Here is some info from the Bourland site: Please note areas that mine and
Doris' line share an interest: First going down is Bnjamin Bourland
married in 1798 in Laurens Co. SC. but notice he died in Fannin Co. Texas which
is also where my Bolding's lived. Mine were there then too I believe.
Also note further down this family moved to Franklin Co. Alabama....exactly
where mine and Doris' lines were....and note that one of them lived in
Pontotoc where Doris' James P. bolding lived.

It is just uncanny how many places that our lines lived adjacent to this
family. Gabriel Bourland intermarried with the Hester family that also
interconnects to mine and Doris' extended families.

Ebenezer BOURLAND was born about 1768 in Wilkes, NC. He died in 1842 in
Franklin Co., AR. He was buried in Bourland Cemetery, Lone Elm, AR. Surnames:
Bourland, Loving, Bolin, Hibbs, Laffoon

May have been in VA Parents: John BOURLAND and Katherine RANDOLPH.

Spouse: Abigail LOVING. Ebenezer BOURLAND and Abigail LOVING were married
about 1790. Children were: James Spear BOURLAND.

Elizabeth and Francis were listed as living in Calloway Co., KY where
at least eight of their ten known children were born. They were listed
in both the 1830 and 1840 federal census of Calloway Co., KY.
According to Yolonda Jones ( a Bourland descendant residing in Benton
KY) they moved to Marshall Co., KY about 1843-44 where two more known
children were born.

Francis' address on 06 Jul 1864 was Sagamon Co., ILL. Their known

There was a William Powell on this list, too, with Ebenezer. Could this
be Jonathan Lee Bolding's father-in-law?

Ebenezer and 3 other brothers are listed as Bourlands and the Bourland
family association has info on them. One was Gabriel Bourland, a John
Bourland and a William and or Archibald Bourland. They lived in Pendleton and
Greenvlle Co.s. SC close to my James Bolding....some on George's Creek
area.

I forgot to add to the below information that there were several
Major[first
name] ?Boldings born in Warwickshire, England.? They are mentioned in the
book :

Pedigree of the Bolding Family of? Warwickshire compiled by W. B. Bickley
1898

If you are intrested I? might write them up.? Some of them died
young...others
were buried there....not sure if any lived to come to Cumberland Co. Va
possibley.

In just glancing this is interesting:

Major Bolding,of Preston Baggot, dec. proved 1749?16 June by Susannah,
his?sister ?and sole executrix.

She was evidently a Bolding who married a Bolding as 1747 23 June Will of
John
Bolding of Preston Baggot, dec.proved by Susannah Bolding his widow and
sole
executric.

I am reminded of the Susannah Bolding of Will Book 2 X of Amelia Co.
VA....with
James and Benjamin Bolding heirs.

Folks,

In going through the box of documents that I got 2 years ago and then
forgot
about, here are some tidbits:

from Goochland County Order Book? 5 1741-1745
p.ii
?
Under a chapter beginning The Court extended its protection to women,
orphans,
and servants:

-mention of how it  helped Mary Napier who was beaten by her husband;

 VA.

the
statement of "eldest son" and heir.]

Doris,

Here is some info from the Bourland site:? Please note areas that mine and
Doris' line share an interest:? First going down is Bnjamin Bourland
married in
1798 in Laurens Co. SC.? but notice he died in Fannin Co. Texas which is
also
where my Bolding's lived.? Mine were there then too I believe.?? Also note
further down this family moved to Franklin Co. Alabama....exactly where
mine and
Doris' lines were....and note that one of them lived in Pontotoc where
Doris'?
James P. bolding lived.
?
It is just uncanny how many places that our lines lived adjacent to this

interconnects to mine and Doris' extended families.?

We know this is Group 4 Bourlands. Remember the little lady whose brother
was tested and she said her William Bolling came "over the mountain on a
horse".... that's her line and well documented but we could never connect
her William. Can't think of her name.

E
H
James
James
John
John B

Texas
which is also where my Bolding's lived.

May have been in VA Parents: John BOURLAND and Katherine RANDOLPH.
Spouse: Abigail LOVING. Ebenezer BOURLAND and Abigail LOVING were married
about 1790. Children were: James Spear BOURLAND.

Elizabeth BOURLAND was born on 9 Dec 1796. She died on 28 Dec 1862 in
Hopkins Co. Kentucky. Parents: John BOURLAND JR and Mary LOVING.

Elizabeth BOURLAND was born on 18 Jun 1807 in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
She died on 15 Mar 1864 in Niantic, Sagamon, Illinois, USA. From a copy
prepared by Marilyn (Bourland) Mendenhall, 16486
Mechanicsburg, Illiopolis Rd., Buffalo, ILL 62515-7055, Ph (217)
364-4560)

Elizabeth and Francis were listed as living in Calloway Co., KY where
at least eight of their ten known children were born. They were listed
in both the 1830 and 1840 federal census of Calloway Co., KY.
According to Yolonda Jones ( a Bourland descendant residing in Benton
KY) they moved to Marshall Co., KY about 1843-44 where two more known
children were born.

Francis' address on 06 Jul 1864 was Sagamon Co., ILL. Their known
children were: Allen, Starling M., Ambrose G., Ira C., William B.,
Martha Ann, Francis Huel Jr., Orpha Jane, Lynn B., and Buena Vista.
Parents: William BOURLAND JR and Anna (Anny) MATHIS. Parents: William BOURLAND
and Anna D. MATHIS.
Spouse: Francis Huell CLAYTON. Francis Huell CLAYTON and Elizabeth
BOURLAND were married on 18 Aug 1825 in , Marshall, Kentucky, USA.353 Children

Elizabeth BOURLAND22 was born on 1 Jun 1829 in Callaway County, KY. She
died on 15 Feb 1909 in Fairle, Hunt County, Texas. Parents: Benjamin BOURLAND
and Martha Wells ADCOCK.

Hannah Emmaline BOURLAND22 was born on 19 Oct 1831 in Paducah, McCracken
