Hazael,

Thank you so much. Without this information and the aerial maps, I would not have been able to find Ann’s property. Thank you for sharing this with me.

The Mount Airy and Eastern Railroad

“The Dinky”

Page Eight: From The Crossroads To The Dan River

The Mount Airy and Eastern Railroad continued up Clark's Creek past where Anthony Terry found the buried rails and crossed the continental divide leaving the waters of the Ararat River into the watershed of the Dan River. It followed first Fall Creek across the land of Darryl and Sandra Clement, Greg Radford to Jerry Love's property where the creek enters the Dan River and the railroad followed the river into Kibler Valley. Above map shows the railroad path from Clark's Creek and down Fall Creek.

Looking from the headwaters of Clark's Creek towards the Crossroads where the Squirrel's Spur Road, Unity Church Road and Ararat Highway meet. It is believed a siding was in this area of the railroad on the right beyond the power pole in this photo, which leads to a story...

That's Our Story And We Are Sticking To It

During the course of following the railroad we heard many stories and many versions of the same story. One involved several of the Clement boys discovering several railroad cars along the siding near the Crossroads loaded with lumber. Being boys they managed to figure out how to release the brake and begin to travel down hill towards Clark's Creek until they realized either they were going to fast or did not know how to stop the engineless train they had started. Regardless, the boys jumped, the cars jumped and the lumber suffered worse for wear leaving quite a mess for the railroad to clean up and quite a story for the boys to tell later in life. So, that's there story and we are sticking to it. Below left looking towards the headwaters of Clark's Creek. The siding would have been on the right of this photo.

Reverend Bob Childress "The Man Who Moved A Mountain"

One of the many people who lived along the route of "The Dinky" was Revered Robert Childress "The Man Who Moved A Mountain." The local tradition has the future Presbyterian Minister working in his Blacksmith Shop, which was located in the pasture shown in the photo above right. Years later after he accepted Jesus Christ as his savior and began to preach Childress invited the children's choir from Clark's Creek Progressive Baptist Church to sing at Mayberry Presbyterian Church on top of the mountain. Did he hear them singing while working in his shop at the foot of Squirrel's Spur. I don't know, but I know it was a courageous action in a time

There are signs along the path of the railroad that show how far we have come as a people. Below is the school near Clark's Creek Church that was for African-American children when segregation was the law of the land. One of the students who studied here was Fred Brim, who became Principal of Blue Ridge Elementary School, where he was not allowed to attend.

The railroad continued across the land of Romey and Barbara Bowman Clement. A special thank you to them both for sharing their knowledge and photos about the railroad. Below left is Bobby and Romey. Below left is their neighbor Jimmy Rorrer, the famous ABC officer, after a good day of squirrel hunting.

Photos Courtesy of Barbara Bowman Clement

Above the railroad continued from the Crossroads to the right of the present day road in the tree line behind the home shown above left. One of the largest washed out trestles is located on the property of Darryl and Sandra Clement shown below.

The railroad makes a sweeping turn after crossing the trestle and follows Fall Creek, a tributary of the Dan River to the confluence with the river.

One person of note along the path of "The Dinky" was Andy Griffith shown above with his parents Carl and Geneva Nunn Griffith. The Nunn Family operated a sawmill on Fall Creek and Andy's mother came from this part of Patrick County. Many of his family live and are buried in the Kibler Valley area. Photo Courtesy of the Mount Airy Museum.

The railroad continued down Fall Creek where one enters the Dan River near the present day site of the waterfalls above and the Love Family Cabin shown below. The railroad turned behind the cabin and continued on towards the Dan River. Of all the places we walked during our trek to follow the railroad this was my favorite. I really enjoyed all the silence surrounding all the noise of nature along with the water was. Special thanks to Jim and Jerry Love and their families for allowing across their property and all the information they shared with us from stories about bears and murders to the route the train took.

The railroad bed still exists along Fall Creek and to the right of the entrance road into the Love Cabin just inside the tree line and slightly elevated shown on the left above. Right, we believe the railroad crossed the Dan River near this spot to Meadowfield where the railroad took several turns over the years to confuse us and everyone who talked about it.

Continue on the Dinky Railroad Up The Dan River To Kibler Valley

Return To The Dinky Home Page

Cut & paste this and you will find about Fall Creek at the Dan River. Interesting. Do any of the names mentioned ring any bells?

Here are the citations Hazael. I might have the actual deeds. I will look in my files.

Wel,l that is certainly correct! I think she says in her footnotes of sources that she put it because he was in the early tax list. But since you have told us an Ann sells land there in Sullivan Co. Tenn. that is what makes me WONDER! Can you give us that source & citation again please? The one for Ann selling land?

The Eggers might have placed a William at the top of their tree, but that doesn’t make it so. I haven’t seen anything that says John’s father is named William, except occasionally someone puts that in their tree with no proof.

Below I have posted the old email that contains the work of the Egger's family that posts a William Bowlin as their earliest known ancestor in Sullivan co. Tenn. She descends from a Jacob.. son of Isaac son of Larkin ..and I find a jacob Bolding in the early Lawrence Co. Ala. censi who could possibly be a connection to my line as somehow my James Bolding knew Martha Wren Bentley of Lawrence Co. Ala. to marry her. Hazael

It was not her husbands line that tested. Now that would certainly be helpful as they are from Jacob who moves over to Carter County, and her husband is a descendant of Ruth Boling of that line so they themselves cannot test.

But the testee who matched me is from Kathryn McKown's line and it was son of Elbert Lee Boling son of Robert son of Larkin that I have stared in the report.

I remember the man stating that Elbert could walk through a forest and tell you the amount of lumber it would produce just by looking at it.

3 June 2010

Good memory, Hazael, I was thinking it was Sandy who sent me the report/chart of the Descendants of William Bowlin. So I was able to find when she sent it by checking my old archives of messages. It was July 2007, that she sent that to me. We had a few exchanges before, as I had found her posting on Rootsweb World Connect for this two families of John’s as she gives it.

I don’t recall her getting someone to do the DNA test, however. That would certainly add to our cases.

The one thing I find interesting about the two families is that they are being born during the same time both families. Or overlapping time frames.

I believe Diane made these kind of comments after she had studied through the two families. So we are close but no firm thing to document these two families being that of John’s in either case of either wife.

I looked further into my newly found Sullivan Co. file and found her name and her email to you. Grady Egger's & wife Sandy Eggers.

Their line was William to John to Isaac to jacob to Elcana called Cain in her listings.Jacob born in Sullivan Co., Isaac born in sullivan co. John born in Henry Co. VA.

She describes them as jet black hair, dark complexions, and either black brown or piercing blue eyes. The Black hair and blue eyes applies to some of mine!

Ladies,

I have finally uploaded [see our documents at Group 5 website] [hopefully] the 9 page document of the Descendants of William Bowlin by the lady that Doris had contacted....I don't know what her name is. She did not sign the document as author. Within its pages are the several generations of the DNA testee who was a 67 match to my James Huston Bolding.

That testee was a descendant of the Elbert Lee Boling m. Mary Catherine Comerford on p. 6. At one time I knew a lady working on that line, but never dreamed that they were kin to me.

Doris, can you give us the name of the author of the Descendants of William Bowlin so I can give her credit?

One thing I noticed was Bolings in Carter Co. Tenn. connected to this tree.

One other thing I notice is that John Boling is 30-40 before John Jr. is born....so that makes me wonder if Elizabeth might not be a second wife. He was 30 years old when Isaac was born. He was 39 when Toliver was born. That seems strange also.

Anyway, I hope you all are able to read them....and let me know if one is missing. Someday I will learn how to make them in the correct order...but although I attach them in the correct order it never seems to work out correctly once at the site.

My line matches this: 67/67

Elbert Lee Boling son of

Larkin B. Boling son of

Tolliver Boling son of

John Boling son of

William Bowlin whom she has placed as the head of this tree.

Hazael,

About this you wrote:
III. Anne Bolling of Sullivan Co. Tennessee. She sold land....Diane has the record. I believe she might be the wife of an early William Bolling in the tax record there in Sullivan Co. or....perhaps she is single also. Don't know. Do know there was a William Bolling in the earliest tax rolls that then disappears...and John Bolling of Sullivan Co. Tenn. family is left there....Group 5 DNA.

They might be the William and Ann of the will. [Note from Diane: William of the will is dead – he died 11 March 1778 at Valley Forge so he can’t have gone anywhere.]
