Doris & all,
We do know that Elizabeth (maiden name unknown) was the wife of John Bolin of
Sullivan County. She is mentioned in at least 2 deeds – one in 1835 and one in
1838. John Bolin Jr is also often in the deed records and he is not the same guy
as your John Tarpley so we do know for sure that John of Sullivan is not John
T’s father. John Jr was still in Sullivan county in 1840 census. There is never
a James associated with John of Sullivan either, and John of Sullivan was never
in South Carolina where your guys were. He went directly from Henry Co., VA to
Montgomery Co., VA to Sullivan, TN and likely arrived in Sullivan county
sometime before 1800. I believe John Jr died sometime between 1840-1850. None of
us have figured out exactly how we relate to John of Sullivan yet, but we know
we do! I think it is possible John of Sullivan is the son of the older John
Bolling in Henry County tax lists who had a son John.
Here is the 1838 deed:
Sullivan, TN Deed Bk 12 pg 136-138

Arvina, I will need to dig back through my binders, but I believe Kathy McKown’s
book “Just Call Me Cousin” is part of some of the materials she shared with me.
Then too, I have the impression that she never really completed the book, just
parts.
This first cousin is of interest to me, in that I would love to share with her
my exchanges with Kathy. Also I can share with you and her the data which I
have collected from what Kathy knew of her Bolling/Bolin families.
Once we can learn just who John’s wife or wives are we will have made great
progress in this long time search for mine and Hazael’s families. One of our
sources claims this John Bolin of Sullivan Co. TN to be our ancestor, father to
my John Tarpley Bolling/Bolding and Hazael’s James Marion Bolling/Bolding.
Where the Camps connect is the mother to Mary Tarpley is Mary Camp, whose
husband is Thomas Tarpley.
Let me hear further should you or this first cousin to Kathy are interested.
Doris

This is a cut and paste from an email I just received from Kathy McKown’s first
cousin. She is a Family Finder Test match. She and I share over a dozen
surnames.
Where can I find Kathy McKown's research? I have tried unsuccessfully to locate
her book "Just Call me Cousin" about the Bollings in Sullivan County TN. I have
a few notes from several years ago that I found on Ancestry.com, however they
have now been deleted from there. Kathy and I are first cousins but I never was
able to meet her. Thank you in advance for any help you can give me. Billie Owen
If you can direct me where to locate the book for her, I would appreciate it.
Have you all read or heard of it?
Thanks,
Arvina

S. Kathryn McKown was a nurse who died several years ago. Fortunately, she left
us her findings on the web.

Well, I’ve emailed her. What I’ve run across when I try to contact my matches
is disinterest and suspicions(how did you get my email address? and what do you
want?) Some never answer because they are suspicious and/or lazy. Some know
their family back to 1900, almost. Lots do not know the name of their
grandparents or where they were born. It is disheartening.
