Oops, a correction on Stephen Walling’s wife – his wife was Mary (thought to be Mary Morrell), his wife was NOT Mary Cox. Sorry about that.

Woody & all,
Here is what I know of the Sullivan, TN Glovers:

Thomas Glover was born 1790 in Virginia, and was the son of Richard Glover who lived in Fauquier, VA before removing to Henry County, VA during the Revolution. He went to Sullivan, TN from there (as did many of the Group 5 Bowlings so maybe it is not a coincidence there are connections with Bowlings in Sullivan). Richard fought in the Rev. War and applied for pension from Sullivan County, TN. You can find a Rev. War pension declaration for Richard Glover at this website:
http://southerncampaign.org/pen/index.htm

The son, Thomas Glover, was listed in the 1812 Sullivan County tax list. He was first married to Nancy Walling, daughter of Stephen Walling and Mary Cox. After Nancy died, Thomas married Rebecca (Droke) Boling in Feb. 1855 in Sullivan County. Rebecca was the widow of Harrison Spencer Boling of Sullivan County - he died sometime between 1844-1850. Rebecca applied for a widow’s pension in 1879 on Thomas Glover’s War of 1812 service. That pension application proves his first wife was Nancy Walling, and also that Rebecca was the widow of Spencer Boling. I don’t know when Rebecca died, but Thomas Glover died 1864. I do not know how Abigail Glover who married Jonathan Carrier fits into the Glover family (their dau. married Callaway Bowling), but suppose she could be a sister of Thomas Glover.

Harrison Spencer Boling was born between 1815-1820. I do not know for sure, but I think he was a son of John Bolin Jr (son of John Sr of Sullivan who was the Rev. War vet). Spencer and Rebecca had 3 children, George W., Mary and Daniel. I know of a living male descendant of Daniel, but so far I have not been able to talk him into a Y-DNA test.

Ladies:

I really admire your persistance. Remember I am always looking for interesting stories for the BFA newsletter.

I am a descendant of Joseph Glover of Charleston, SC in the late 1600s. Do you have any info on the Tenn. Glover?

  Hazael,

I think Callaway is another son of John Bolin?s, but I don?t know for sure. Callaway was born in 1808 in Tennessee and married Susan Carrier, dau. of Jonathan Carrier and Abigail Glover. There is a Glover connection to some of the Sullivan County Bolins. Callaway and Susan had a bunch of children. The last I find of Callaway is in the 1850 & 1860 census records in Sullivan County. His widow Susan is head of household in 1870:

  1870 Sullivan Co., TN:
  p. 11 [398]; 26 Jul 1870

  HH 71/71
  BOLING, Susan 54 hsekpr 200 694 TN
  ____ Charlotte 32 TN
  COMBES Amanda 28 TN
BOLING, William G. 25 farm laborer TN
  ____ Jane 19 TN
____ Hugh 18 farm laborer TN
  ____ Andrew 15 TN
  COMBES William 9 TN
  ____ David 7 TN
  ____ Mary E. 9?12 TN

The above census was from the Combs site.

Hazael, I have never seen a James Bolin in the records of Sullivan County. If you happen to have a citation of such, please share it when you get home!

I have this index citation for Callaway, but not the actual document, so I don?t know if there are other names in the deed for witnesses or whatever, but it seems awfully late to have anything to do with your James:

Index for Land & Property Sullivan County, Tennessee
SL Fam Hist Lib Microfilm # 0972701 Index
  Bowling, Calaway from Richard Hopkins - 50a S of Hols R 20 100 Deed Nov 28 1855

I wonder where Calloway Bolin fits into these folks. He is just the next page in the census...1840 I think....and it is his deed that a james Bowlin signed I am thinking top of my head this morning.
