First of all a correction....it is the city of Grey or Gray...not county. Then here is the history of these counties:
Washington county, Tennessee created 1n 1777:
Sullivan county, Tennessee created in 1779 from Washington
Hawkins county, Tennessee created in 1786 from Sullivan county
Grainger county, Tennessee created in 1796 from Hawkins and Knox.
WASHINGTON COUNTY lies between Greene and Carter Counties, and is bounded on the north by Sullivan and on the south by Union. Its area is abut 350 square miles. The surface is generally more or less broken, and in the southern part it becomes mountainous. The valleys are fertile, as is also much of the upland. The principal stream in the county is the Nolachucky River, which traverses the southern part. Its chief tributaries are the Big Limestone and Buffalo.
The most valuable mineral of the county is iron, which is found in great abundance.
The first permanent settlement in Tennessee was made in 1769 on Boone Creek by Capt. William Bean, who came in that year from Pittsylvania County, Va. His son, Russell Bean, is said to have been the first white child born in the State. soon after Bean made his settlement, in 1770 and 1771, James Robertson, Landon Carter and others, laid the foundation of the Watauga settlements, which at first were mainly in what is now Carter County. the steady stream of emigrants from the older States, however, soon forced these to overflow into the territory now embraced in Washington and Greene Counties.
At Cherokee Creek Metting-house, on the fourth Saturday in October, 1786 [Minutes of Holston Association. Other authorities put it as early as 1779] wasorganized the Holston Baptist Associations, at which time six churches were represented as follows: Cherokee Creek- James Keel, John Broyles, John Layman and William Murphy; Bent Creek- Tidence Lane, Isaac Barton and Francis Hamilton; [I can connect mine in land next to Isaac Lane son of Tidence Lane. Hazael]
The settlement in Hawkins County was confined chiefly to Carter's Valley until about 1780. Several stations or forts were built, and it is said that a Presbyterian Church was organized there as early as that date. At about the same time a fort was built at Big Creek. Not far from this fort, about three and one-half miles above Rogersville, Thomas Amis in 1780 or 1781 created a stone house, around which he built a palisade for protection against the Indians. The next year he opened a store, and erected a blacksmith shop and a distillery. Very soon after he also put into operation a saw and grist-mill, and from the first he kept a house of entertainment. A Baptist Church was organized, and a school established very soon after the settlement was made. The church was probably organized by Thomas Murrell.
History of Grainger County
Grainger County was formed from neighboring Hawkins and Knox Counties in 1796, the same year Tennessee became a state. Many of the county's records go back to the time before statehood, when the area was part of North Carolina and then the Territory South of the River Ohio. Later the counties of Anderson, Claiborne, Campbell, Scott, Hancock, Union, and Hamblen were formed from parts of the original Grainger County. Grainger County was truly a turnstile for settlers traveling north, west, or south, but many chose to settle in this beautiful area of East Tennessee.

Folks,
I have been trying to decipher the deed that a James Bolling signed in 1790 in Washington Co. NC which becomes Washington Co. Tenn. and later some sites say Grainger and then possibly Gray Co. Tenn. [Sullivan is very near!]]
It is the deed that Ernie has mentioned many times regarding Massengill - Henrey I believe. It states that Massengill's land lay on Boones Creek. next to William Bean.
I have tried to google this and mapquest it and it appears to be about equi-distant between Roane Mountain Bollings and Sullivan Co. Tenn. Bollings and if it truly did include Grainger at one time as one site said, then perhaps mine and Rosemary's Bollings.
One site mentions near to Elizabethton, in Grey Co. Tenn. They do know where Boone's Creek was. They also know where Bean's first cabin was located. SOOOOOOO
Here is my question! How have we determined just which James Bolling this is? He signed his name.....not an X. In 1790 ,my James was only 10 years old. So not my James....but could be related. Grainger is interesting if at one time Grainger did include this area.
How do we know for sure that he is ours? There were Beans who move down into Franklin Co. Ala. and near to mine....but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can anyone help my thinking process here?

Oops, a correction on Stephen Walling’s wife – his wife was Mary (thought to be Mary Morrell), his wife was NOT Mary Cox. Sorry about that.

Woody & all,
Here is what I know of the Sullivan, TN Glovers:
Thomas Glover was born 1790 in Virginia, and was the son of Richard Glover who lived in Fauquier, VA before removing to Henry County, VA during the Revolution. He went to Sullivan, TN from there (as did many of the Group 5 Bowlings so maybe it is not a coincidence there are connections with Bowlings in Sullivan). Richard fought in the Rev. War and applied for pension from Sullivan County, TN. You can find a Rev. War pension declaration for Richard Glover at this website:
http://southerncampaign.org/pen/index.htm
The son, Thomas Glover, was listed in the 1812 Sullivan County tax list. He was first married to Nancy Walling, daughter of Stephen Walling and Mary Cox. After Nancy died, Thomas married Rebecca (Droke) Boling in Feb. 1855 in Sullivan County. Rebecca was the widow of Harrison Spencer Boling of Sullivan County - he died sometime between 1844-1850. Rebecca applied for a widow’s pension in 1879 on Thomas Glover’s War of 1812 service. That pension application proves his first wife was Nancy Walling, and also that Rebecca was the widow of Spencer Boling. I don’t know when Rebecca died, but Thomas Glover died 1864. I do not know how Abigail Glover who married Jonathan Carrier fits into the Glover family (their dau. married Callaway Bowling), but suppose she could be a sister of Thomas Glover.
Harrison Spencer Boling was born between 1815-1820. I do not know for sure, but I think he was a son of John Bolin Jr (son of John Sr of Sullivan who was the Rev. War vet). Spencer and Rebecca had 3 children, George W., Mary and Daniel. I know of a living male descendant of Daniel, but so far I have not been able to talk him into a Y-DNA test.

Ladies:
I really admire your persistance. Remember I am always looking for interesting stories for the BFA newsletter.
I am a descendant of Joseph Glover of Charleston, SC in the late 1600s. Do you have any info on the Tenn. Glover?

Hazael,
I think Callaway is another son of John Bolin?s, but I don?t know for sure. Callaway was born in 1808 in Tennessee and married Susan Carrier, dau. of Jonathan Carrier and Abigail Glover. There is a Glover connection to some of the Sullivan County Bolins. Callaway and Susan had a bunch of children. The last I find of Callaway is in the 1850 & 1860 census records in Sullivan County. His widow Susan is head of household in 1870:
1870 Sullivan Co., TN:
p. 11 [398]; 26 Jul 1870
HH 71/71
BOLING, Susan 54 hsekpr 200 694 TN

BOLING, William G. 25 farm laborer TN
____ Jane 19 TN
____ Hugh 18 farm laborer TN
____ Andrew 15 TN
COMBES William 9 TN
____ David 7 TN
____ Mary E. 9?12 TN
The above census was from the Combs site.

Hazael, I have never seen a James Bolin in the records of Sullivan County. If you happen to have a citation of such, please share it when you get home!
I have this index citation for Callaway, but not the actual document, so I don?t know if there are other names in the deed for witnesses or whatever, but it seems awfully late to have anything to do with your James:

I wonder where Calloway Bolin fits into these folks. He is just the next page in the census...1840 I think....and it is his deed that a james Bowlin signed I am thinking top of my head this morning.
