Betty --
Again, thank you for giving us these marriages. I'm going to take your statement and insert some things [off the top of my head] that I remember which might help in our search --- my notes will be in red. Since these folks often married cousins, it is frequently very helpful to study the wives connection. We have some excellent researchers but we've come to a dead end often. Every citation you can give us helps a great deal. We hope everyone will chip in on this one. -- Ernie

James Bolin married Jennet Ferguson [There were Fergusons living in Lunenburg -ep] and they had one son, Daniel, who is our ancestor. Daniel was born August 4, 1798, in Cumberland County and Jennet died nine days later, on August 13, 1798, as a result of childbirth. (There is no reason for this to be underlined, I copied it from another document and cannot get it off.) About four years later, James married Lucretia Bell [Doris is from Samuel Love and a Bell; these people moved to Unicoi Co., TN and intermarried with the Webbs, Dillards-ep] and they had eight children, all born in Cumberland County. One of their children was named Christoper and that name was passed down in the family of at least one of the eight children. (Many people believe that our line is descended from the original James in Virginia through his son Christopher.)

Our ancestor, Daniel Bolin, son of James Bolin and Jennet Ferguson, born August 4, 1798, in Cumberland County, died October 19, 1869 in Troup, County, Georgia at the age of 71. Daniel married Rachel Callaway [Edward "Ned" Callaway lived in Lunenburg and this line connects to the Avents & Bakers both of whom moved to North Carolina from Virginia; these are the Gunsmith Bakers and intermarried with Rev. John Thompsons girls, well documented in Prince Edward Co., VA. Many in Group 5, Clay Co., KY Bolling/Bowlings claim a connection. --ep] on February 8, 1821, in Jasper County, Georgia when he was 21 years old and she was 19. Rachel was born April 11, 1800 in Hancock County, Georgia and died August 1, 1877 in Troup County, Georgia at the age of 77. Daniel and Rachel had nine children and their second child, James Addison, was my great grandfather. He moved to Alabama and married Caroline Williams. Their youngest child was my grandfather, Eugene Houston Bolin. [We have many connections to the Williams; the only clearly documented one is mine of Isle of Wight [early 1600's] and Yvonne's of Hanover County, very early; hers married Hendersons of early Tennessee, among other lines. -- ep]

Following is a copy of the e-mail exchanged when Betty first joined our group. Notice in the tax list that Diane sent, there is a John Rea. Also, in the Abstract of Minutes... "SARAH BOLLING granted administration on the estate of WILLIAM BOLLING. " Is Sarah positively William's widow? My early James Bolling's parents were "James and Sarah".

Probably coincidences, but interesting.

Our markers are already at the 37 level and there are no matched with yours. The story of “my James” who was born in 1767 is well circulated and was even printed in a small historical journal in North Carolina. It was a perfect story that I now believe is not true. It was that “my James” was an orphan who came to North Carolina from Scotland with a family of a different name. The problem is that we have the will of his older brother William who left “my James” all of his property and it seems that their father’s name was also William -- and then there is the DNA that shows our earliest known ancestor .. (The question is why would he make up such a story? Was he trying to hide something?)

James Bolin married Jennet Ferguson and they had one son, Daniel, who is our ancestor. Daniel was born August 4, 1798, in Cumberland County and Jennet died nine days later, on August 13, 1798, as a result of childbirth. Many of us are missing our exact link (with proof) back to James Bowling who was transported to Virginia by George Alves. We know we descend from him, but many of us don’t know for sure which one of James Bowling’s sons we descend from because of lack of definitive records proving such.

By the way, my line also spells their name Bolin (for the most part), and mine went from Henry, VA to Hawkins, TN to Clay, KY to Indiana.

We (really my first cousin who is a male Bolin) seem to have an exact match at the 12 marker level and the exact spelling of Bolin. I am in group 5 of the Bolling Family Association and, according to DNA, my earliest known ancestor is James Bowling, who was "brought to Virgina" in 1700. Our earliest known ancestor, based on family records is James Bolin (1767-1843) who lived in Cumberland County (now Harnett County) North Carolina. He had an older brother and father whose names were William. I am missing the link between the first James who arrived in Virginia in 1700 and the James Bolin who was in Cumberland County, North Carolina by about 1770. Do you have any thoughts on this?

I'm so glad you've contacted us. Early DNA tests suggests your Bolin is in Group 5; however, we need more informaation to help. Could you give us dates, names, places of marriages, spouses, etc. on your Bolins? We'll be glad to help all we can. Thank you again for contacting us.
